We have been experimenting with Instagram, finding out what makes the social media channel tick. These are our findings...

Follow accounts similar to yours Don’t be put off by a negate following/followers ratio at first. It’s important you make yourself visible on Instagram as it’s a community. You will find yourself gaining followers if you participate in that community. Keep in mind however, people will be put off following someone who ‘spam follows’ so keep it sensible.

Like & comment on other photos ENGAGE! You engage, you increase the chances someone might like your pic back and even follow you. I’ve found people are incredibly sensitive when it comes to their images, so drop them a complimentary line and they will often feel inclined to do the same. If not, it’s still likely they check out who’s been stalking them, giving you exposure.

Respond to comments Responding to comments will appear in their activity. This will be visible to other followers who might have similar interests. Again, engaging with such an active community like Instagram will go a long way I your favour.

Hashtags Hashtags are one of the best ways to bringing your images to the surface. Hash tagging will tag your image placing it in a public list. I’ve listed some popular hashtags to get you started. #igers | #photooftheday | #love | #me | #follow For more consider using Webstagram as it’s a great tool for finding what the most popular trending tags are.

Ask your followers questions Use the photo caption to ask your followers questions. This will generate a lot of activity in your comments section, attract more viewers to your photo.

Consider using a ‘call-to-action’, such as “Double-tap if you found this funny” or “Share your story in the comments”. This will help drive community interaction with your photos.

Connect your accounts It’s important to connect your accounts in the settings menu as doing this will allow you to push your Instagram photos to your connected accounts, such as Facebook or Twitter, giving you a larger exposure.

Geotag your photos Instagram users are interested in photos from locations that they know. On top of that, as you post geotagged photos, Instagram will bring up other photos from that location. Other users posting photos from the same location may see your pictures and follow them to your profile.

Take ‘good’ pictures, never spam Effective Instagramming is, first and foremost, about quality. To the typical Instagrammer there’s nothing worse than having to scroll through tonnes of similar looking images one after the other, so hold back on the selfies and food. It’s also worth considering taking images that relate to your audience by seeing what works. From this you can begin to find a niche which sparks a lot of excitement.

Posting at the right time Instagram photos typically last around 4 hours in a person’s feed, so avoid posting in the middle of the night or your followers may never actually see the image. You can check the best times for your account by visiting iconosquare (Instagram’s analytics tool).

I’d love to know what worked and what didn’t for you, so leave me a comment!
