This blog post is targeted more towards startup businesses who are struggling to gain exposure through social media.
After spending a day with Matt Navara, Digital Co-ordinator for The Next Web I gained some really insightful information about what ‘goes down’ well on social media platforms.
To start, I would recommend taking a class in copy writing to loosen you up, as headlines, body text and effective use of buzz words, in statuses, are always important for enticing an audience.
I would also check out the ‘curiosity gap‘ – giving your audience enough information about a topic but not enough for them to skip past. “This girl fell over, but what happened next was amazing”.
For the main body of your statuses, typically you will find links to List posts (Top Ten Amazing Cakes), How to guides (How to bake a cake fast!) and Video/Image statuses will achieve the most engagement. (Facebook, in particular, is geared to feature/promote video).
Always remember people love visual/shareable media. If you have time or the resources to put together these I would strongly recommend it.
This advice can be applied across the social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook and Pintrest (to name a few) but one mistake startups make is avoiding G+ and Linkedin. Here’s why.
Google + has over 500M active users. That’s more than Twitter and Instagram put together. And Linkedin drives %50 of all business opportunities! Get on G+ and LinkedIn even if you don’t actively use it as much as Twitter/FB.
One piece of advice when starting up on G+ however is that a large percentage of the audience tend to enjoy the geeky technical stuff and that Linked in users migrate toward Life hacks, developing knowledge, Linkedin related info and anything career prospect related. Worth bearing in mind.
