Following on from my last blog post, ‘How to write popular posts you can rely on’, I’m going to identify (with the help of Matt Navara, Digital Co-ordinator for The Next Web) when and how to make the most out of your content by highlighting key times and techniques for the strongest engagement.

Engagement behaviour differs slightly for each social media platform so I will focus mainly on Twitter, although some techniques can be applied to all social media sites.

Preferably, as a small start up or independent business, 3-5 tweets p/24hr will be adequate. Quality over quantity applies here as you don’t want to spam people’s feeds. (Again, Facebook differs slightly. You’ll be best off aiming for around 1-3 status a day as they remain in people’s timelines for longer).

It is important, when sharing your content, to focus on and identify popular times during the day. Typically 11am (UK time) is most popular on Twitter however, to keep engagement ticking throughout the day, it is worth factoring in different time zones/countries. Remember to check your insights for engagement statistics as this will identify when your audience are online.

It is also worth mentioning or tagging ‘big’ followers in posts as this will also stretch your audience baseline. Keep in mind, if doing so, it’s a great opportunity to refer people back to your main site by including a link.

There are countless ways in which people succeed at promoting their content, remember to check your insights for detailed stats (read my Top Ten Apps/Programmes blog entry for great resources) and test methods that work best for you.
