TOP TIPS FOR WRITING BLOGS

Blog writing is quite different to academic writing or even journalistic writing, because the reader is time poor. This means that articles should not be too long, and the reader should feel like they gained something (i.e. information that is useful) without having to work too hard. Readers want quick, easily digestible information. Using bullet points and concise sentences using good, simple English is a good way of achieving this result. Think conversational writing more than formal.

The reader is also quite conscious of being sold to, and blog articles should be written in a way where they skilfully sell our expertise, without saying “buy from us!”

SOME GENERAL GUIDELINES

  • Blog posts should conclude with an opinion, but balance the argument first

  • Blog posts can be controversial, but not offensive

  • Titles should be interesting while not giving the whole story away

  • Blog posts should generally be between 300-500 words in length

  • They should generally focus on one topic. The blog readers mind quickly wanders, so keep them focused and on topic. By introducing too many topics, they will get distracted and leave

  • Start with something topical, such as a statistic or recent news article

  • Finish with your conclusion

  • When responding to comments, research your answers, and respond in a positive way

Have fun!
